Evolutionary genomic peculiarities of conifer reproductive systems

Conifers have several reproductive characteristics that make them amenable for unique evolutionary questions and experimental setups. We have utilized the conifer haploid megagametophyte in studies of haploid selection as well as in bioinformatic challenges. Genes expressed in haploid megagametophyte are expected to be under strong natural selection due to lack of masking. Megagametophyte facilitates identification of paternal and maternal alleles from embryos and later life stages. RNA and DNA data from haploid tissue allowed us to improve the transcriptome assembly as well as to identify paralog mapping issues in various genotyping applications. Conifers also often have simple polyzygotic polyembryony and we have used evolutionary forward simulations to study the underlying reasons of its evolution and impact on inbreeding and inbreeding depression.
