Diversity, Evolution and Adaptation of Populations

Our research aims to understand the genetic determinism of plant-plant interactions to manage and enhance the cultivated diversity for the agro-ecological transition. They are based on three methodologies, (i) mechanistic modelling and simulation, (ii) statistical modelling for inference and prediction, and (iii) participatory design and experimentation. Our model species is bread wheat.

Theme 1. Optimization of intra-plot genetic diversity

  • Genetic modeling and methodology to breed varieties for intra- and inter-specific mixtures:
    • quantitative genetics of mixing ability: GMA/SMA (Forst et al., 2019; lme4mix) and DBV-SBV (Haug et al., 2021)
    • design of new breeding programs coupling data from monocultures and mixtures: PhD of J. Salomon
  • Ecophysiology-genetic modeling of plant-plant interactions:
    • model development of interactions for light: WALTer and WHEAMM (Gawinowski, 2023)
    • development of high-throughput phenotyping methodologies, notably drone: PhD of V. Freitas
    • impact of plant-plant interactions on mixture evolution: Blanc (2022)
  • Interplay between plant-plant and host-pathogen interactions: PhD of M. Remérand
  • Co-design of ideotypes and breeding programs for mixing ability:
    • assembly and multi-criteria assessment: Optimix
    • prediction and selection of the most performant mixtures
